4. Lifta

In a recent study, we ask young Israelis 5-10 years after completing their higher education, what was meaningful for them in their community- engagement as students. We found that the most important factor that contributed to the establishment of a meaningful experience: was the peer group. The peer group was remembered as a place for self-reflection, support, and meaning. I will present four best practices of Community-Engaged Courses:

1. Community Interpreting – students translating in hospitals.
2. Art and Activism- students, faculty and residents building the railway park
3. Education for prevention of sexual violence- students facilitating workshops in high schools.
4. Save Lifta-conserving the green village.

The classroom of community-engaged courses is valued by students, as a safe heaven, where they can learn from each other. For most Jewish and Arabs students– the first time they ever talked to the “other”.
