Dr. Kathy Takayamaは、沖縄科学技術大学院大学(OIST)で初代のExecutive Director of the Center for Professional Development and Inclusive Excellence (C-Hub)に着任される予定です。同氏は20年以上に渡り、ブラウン大学、コロンビア大学、ハワード・ヒューズ医学研究所をはじめ、世界各国の大学・研究機関において長年に渡って先進的な教育・研究改善を主導されてきました。また、カーネギー教育研究財団研究員、National Academies Educationフェロー(生命科学分野)、International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL)会長等も歴任され、国際的な教育賞も受賞されています。詳しくは、英文版プロフィールをご覧ください。

Dr. Kathy Takayama (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University)

Dr. Kathy Takayama is the incoming inaugural Executive Director of the Center for Professional Development and Inclusive Excellence (C-Hub) at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST). She has over 20 years of experience leading transformations to develop high-impact, inclusive, and productive educational environments in higher education. In 2003, Dr. Takayama was selected as the first international Carnegie Scholar by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, and was named National Academies Education Fellow in the Life Sciences by the US National Research Council in 2008. She is the recipient of national and international teaching awards and co-founded the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) in 2004, serving as ISSOTL President from 2014-15. A professor of molecular microbiology, Dr. Takayama previously served as executive director of professional development centers at Brown University and Columbia University. In 2017, she was invited as a Senior Fellow by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to collaborate on the Inclusive Excellence Initiative, which builds capacity for institutional change toward a culture of creativity and inclusion. Dr. Takayama has served on numerous international advisory boards including Ireland’s Higher Education National Forum, and Fulbright University–Vietnam (a collaboration between the US and Vietnamese governments to establish Vietnam’s first private, nonprofit liberal arts university), and has served as external advisor to universities throughout the US and Europe, and in Japan, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Guatemala, Panama, Ghana, and South Africa. At OIST, she leads the development of programs and initiatives that integrate capacity building for equity and inclusion into curricular and pedagogical strategy, research leadership, mentorship, and professional development. Takayama received a B.S. in Life Sciences from MIT and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Rutgers Medical School.

世界中の大学が、研究・教育・人材育成のために、より効果的・公平・魅力的な風土づくりのための自己検証を進めています。卒業生の将来の可能性は、学生たちのための包括的な学びの環境を意図的に醸成し、弾力性のある組織体制を構築できるかどうかに懸かっています。無用とされている者たちの声を聴き、包括性とエビデンスに基づいた戦略によって卓越性を実現するとは、どういうことなのでしょうか?

これまで歴史的にマジョリティーではなかった学生や教員の能力・背景・将来的可能性を活かせなければ、大学はミッションを前進させる重要な機会を失うことになります。今後の組織的な一体感や構成員の帰属意識について考えていく上で、私たちは自分たちの大学のエコシステムの中にある障壁を認識する必要があります。教育・研究をより魅力的で開放的なプロセスとして促進するために、一部の者たちだけによって享受されている排他的な領域や場所の境界をどのように取り除けるでしょうか?教育者・研究者として、私たちの実践を可視化するための暗示的なルールづくりを行うことには、どのような意味があるのでしょうか?私たちは、自分たち自身の洞察・直感・経験を振り返ることによって、新たに想像された機会を得ることができるのです。

私は本セミナーを通じて、大学や主要な研究機関におけるこれまでの自分の仕事・経験を通じて学んだことや、模範的なフレームワークを共有したいと思います。参加される皆さんには、それぞれの大学・機関において、多様性・平等性・包括性を高めるための組織改革と体制構築を進めるために、既存のプロセスをさらにどのように発展させるかを考える機会としていただければ幸いです。

Universities around the globe are engaged in a process of self-examination to develop more effective, equitable, and engaging climates for research, teaching, and career success. The future potential of our graduates depends upon our intentionality toward cultivating inclusive learning environments for our students, and building institutional capacity for resilience. What does it mean to give voice to those that have been marginalized, and realize that excellence is achieved through inclusion and evidence-based strategies?

Universities lose a critical opportunity to advance their mission by not benefiting from the talent, background, and future potential of students and faculty who are not part of the historical majority. To envision belonging, we need to recognize barriers in the ecosystem of our institutions. How do we remove the boundaries to what might be experienced by some as exclusive domains or spaces, and foster teaching and research as engaged and unbounded processes? As teachers and researchers, what does it mean to make the implicit rules of our praxis visible? By revisiting our own insights, instincts, and experiences, we have an opportunity to braid them into reimagined opportunities.

I will share model frameworks and critical lessons learned through my work with universities and major research institutions. I invite the audience to consider what opportunities exist at their own institutions to develop ongoing processes for institutional transformation and capacity building to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
