Message from the Director
The Center is presently composed of two Divisions, Studies in Higher Education and Educational Media Research and Development, and one Office, the Educational Assessment Office. It is working assiduously to develop more multi-faceted and innovative approaches to educational reform and enhancement through initiatives such as the university functional strengthening project titled Consolidation of the Support Base for Evidence-Based Educational Reform and Internationalization of Education Using ICT (Information and Communication Technology) (2015-2019), as well as joint research projects with industry partners.
Under the Center's new missions, all faculty and staff members will work tirelessly to further refine and cultivate education at Kyoto University, one of the world’s leading institutions of higher education, even as the conditions faced by universities both within and beyond Japan grow more challenging year by year. I would be grateful for your continued understanding and support of the activities and programs of our Center.

My current areas of interest include educational innovation, open education, technology-enhanced scholarship of teaching and learning, and future higher education systems. In addition to my work at the CPEHE, I am serving as Deputy Vice President for Education to help advance learning and teaching as well as spur educational transformation at Kyoto University and beyond. I also enjoy working with various national and international initiatives and organizations to provide visions and leadership for the development and distribution of innovative educational practice.

My research broadly addresses teaching and learning in higher education, and I am especially interested in the study of capabilities (“new capabilities”), learning (Deep Active Learning), and assessment & evaluation (performance assessment). Before coming to the Center I specialized in primary/secondary education, and even now I pursue my research and practical support activities, taking note of similarities and differences between primary/secondary education and higher education.
If I come across a cat, I cannot help calling to it. In junior high school my specialty was long jump, and as a university student I was into hot air balloons. I guess I like to jump and fly.

My research field is educational technology with a focus on the ways to make teaching practice at universities more effective and interesting using ICT. Through action research, I try to develop models for educational practice as a system.
Some of the things I like doing are eating, cooking, and keeping a diary of my experience raising children. I enjoy wondering how interesting and funny children can be.

My research concerns the field of open education and the use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in higher education. Within Kyoto University, I am mainly engaged in the planning, production, and management of MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses), as well as promoting and enhancing the use of online support systems for teaching and learning. An extra benefit of my work on MOOC is that I get to know faculty members well.

I bring sociological and social anthropological perspectives into higher education research and practice. I have undertaken research projects on academic identities, doctoral education, and teaching assistant & learning assistant professional development.
As my undergraduate degree was in Southeast Asian Studies, I love experiencing different cultures and life habits.

I am interested in informational education and work on its improvement by analyzing learning process and materials as well as developing the materials. I am also engaged in the production of MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses). I enjoy the taste of Beer, herring roe, sea urchin, salmon roe, etc. All of my favorite foods and drinks are purine-rich. Everything that is delicious is full of purines!

I am in charge of planning and producing videos and promotional materials for the projects conducted by the Center, such as MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) and Kyoto University OCW (OpenCourseWare). I would like to keep thinking about what approaches to the design are needed in order to deliver our accumulated contents more effectively to the users.

I have been studying the factors promoting or inhibiting our health and adaptation with the framework of “Prevention Education”. I am strongly interested in how humans grow and develop by their own learning and education. My main work is about education assessment. Through my studies and works, I would also like to think about how people can be healthy and happy.
