The Center (Division for Studies in Higher Education) offers a cooperative course (Higher Education Studies Course) in the Graduate School of Education, and is involved in graduate education at both master’s and doctoral programs. Under a system of team supervision by faculty members specializing in a variety of academic disciplines (including educational engineering, educational psychology, and educational methodology), graduate students can have expose to multi-faceted approaches to research on higher education. Students completing this graduate program take up academic appointments at universities and play active roles in the theory and practice of reform and enhancement of university education.

It provides an overview of the characteristics of various research methods, as well as designing research plans through discussion with other course participants, including development of feasible research questions, and selection and critique of related literature. |

I am engaged theoretically and practically in promotion, diffusion and enlightenment of educational innovations using ICT and new educational methods and in futurological research on higher education systems which have been globalized, open, and ubiquitous in the advanced information and knowledge-based societies. In addition, I work on comparative research on institutions and cultures regarding university education, organization, administration and leadership mainly in North America and Japan.
I critically investigate ability-related concepts (literacy, competence, etc.) in post-modern society and how they should be developed in formal education (including university education) from perspectives such as curriculum and assessment & evaluation, and seek to construct practice-oriented theories on them. A feature of my research is that it engages with differences and similarities across the various levels of formal education, using actual cases collected through fieldwork.
I have been pursuing research on the organization and management of universities implementing e-learning, and the effects of ICT in teaching and learning processes. I am also interested in the growth processes of university faculty members and conducting research focusing especially on the issues related to preparing future faculty. My goal is to theorize the relationships between ICT and FD through implementing FD projects using ICT, in order to enhance teaching quality.
I do practical research on ICT (Information and Communication Technology) use to enhance higher education. I am currently interested in the development of online support environments so that a diversity of educational enhancement initiatives at various levels can be effectively visible and sharable for individual teachers, teacher communities, and organizations.
I bring sociological and social anthropological perspectives into higher education research and practice. I have undertaken research projects on academic identities, doctoral education, and teaching assistant & learning assistant professional development.
As my undergraduate degree was in Southeast Asian Studies, I love experiencing different cultures and life habits.
