In "Trends," we will present various topics related to the current form of education that uses Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

In recent years, online education has come to play an important role in regular programs at higher education institutions, as described in the Series, MicroMasters, which features MicroMasters programs offered via edX. An increasing number of institutions have begun to undertake MOOC-based certification of credits and degrees.

Coventry University in England announced that the institution will offer more than 50 master's education programs via the MOOC platform FutureLearn ("FutureLearn and Coventry University to Roll Out 50 Online Degrees" , Class Central, August 7, 2017). Each program is fully online, in which the institution offers entirely online services, such as provision of lectures and educational resources, implementation of exams, grading, and tutoring support. As of June 2019, this approach has been adopted for master's courses in business, law, life sciences, and engineering. (Click here for more detailed information.)

In addition to Class Central and other higher education media, the economic magazine Forbes also reported on this approach. The program has drawn attention as a trailblazing case of MOOC-based higher education. ("This Is What A University Of The Future Looks Like," Forbes, June 28, 2017.)

As reported above, Coventry University takes a leading role in offering fully online master's degree programs. The institution also plans to offer a fully online program "International Business BA Top-up" for undergraduates starting in September 2019. Expectations are high for future developments in their approach. (Click here for more detailed information.)
