Rice University's Project on Open-Source Textbooks: OpenStax

【Trends】No.5 Published on October 4, 2017.

In "Trends," we will present various topics related to the current form of education that uses Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

In recent years, open educational resources (OER) such as online electronic textbooks (e-textbooks) and digital educational materials have been widely developed and published online and their utilization has been promoted in higher education. OER is considered not only as one of the options for choosing better teaching materials, but also for selecting teaching materials that can be used for free.

OpenStax, which is a nonprofit project by Rice University, has provided university textbooks that are already peer-reviewed by experts in various disciplines such as chemistry, physics, economics, sociology and American History. Faculty members can browse and download the materials that suit their purposes. The e-textbooks that are published by OpenStax are available under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License and faculties can utilize them for educational purposes under certain conditions.
