International Symposium:
"How MOOC Evolves University Education"

Published online: August 9, 2017

The international symposium, entitled "How MOOC Evolves University Education" and hosted by the Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education, was held in Inamori Hall of Shiran Kaikan at Kyoto University on December 9, 2015. This symposium welcomed Ms. Kathy Pugh, the Vice President of Education Services at edX as the keynote speaker.

Overview

Since 2012, or what is referred to as "the first year of MOOC," the number of MOOC participants has been increasing around the world. This prompts us to reconsider how higher education should be. Among Japanese universities, Kyoto University joined edX for the first time and has been delivering online courses since May 2013.
In this symposium, Ms. Kathy Pugh delivered a speech on MOOC related international trends and initiatives. Subsequently, information and opinion with regard to the overview of Kyoto University's MOOC-related efforts, analysis of MOOC learners' data, instances of specific practices, and the future outlook of education utilizing MOOC were exchanged.

With regard to the open source MOOC platform from edX, which is called "Open edX," she stated that: it is significant that it is used on a number of sites around the world. She also expressed her hope that edX continues providing better courses with its partner institutions.

In a panel discussion which was held later in the symposium, five faculty members who involved in the MOOC production in Kyoto University (Associate Professor Hiroyuki Sakai of Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education, Professor Ryo Yamada of Graduate School of Medicine, Associate Professor Tetsushi Ito of Graduate School of Science, Associate Professor Yutaka Yamauchi of Graduate School of Management, and Associate Professor Mana Taguchi of Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education) provided presentations on an overview of MOOC initiatives at the university, case studies, and the results from data analysis.
