Published online: August 9, 2017

The 90th international symposium, entitled "Advancing Higher Education in the Age of MOOC" and hosted by the Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education, was held in Inamori Hall of Shiran Kaikan at Kyoto University on January 19, 2015. This symposium, in which 87 people from inside and outside the campus participated, welcomed Professor Robert A. Lue, Faculty Director of HarvardX and the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University.

Overview

In recent years, while there is a growing interest in the use of MOOC and OCW in higher education, Japanese universities don't always have comprehensive systems to support such educational development. Thus, there is an urgent need to create such capacity. This symposium gives an overview of Harvard University's pioneering initiatives, their outcomes, and the status of educational reform and faculty development efforts in Japanese universities. In this symposium, concrete measures for educational innovation and educational improvement were explored and possibilities and challenges were actively discussed.
